Safeguards, OIP S'IBJECT:

IMPORT OF SEALED SOURCE CONTAINING TRITIUM 1880021 On December 12, 1980, Philips Electronic Instruments, Inc., requested a license authorizing the import of sealed sources, each containing 250 millicures of tritium, contained in PD2F fuel detectors for use by Naval Ordnance Station, Indian Head, Maryland in the detection of torpedo fuel concentrations.

Philips advises that the Company is licensed by the State of New York to possess the PD2F detectors containing Nickel, but not tritium.

In any event, Philips will not possess the devices.

Instead they will be delivered directly to the Naval Ordnance Station.

Philips Electronic Instruments, Inc. (David Haas) was advised by telephone that d

the import license would not authorize possession.

This material in a sealed capsule is judged to be of minim?1 hazard and does not present a significant threat to public health and safety or to the environment and is not considered inimical to the common defense or security. The staff recommends issuance of license 1880021 to Philips Electronic Instruments, Inc.
