SEP 2 31980 S.ket No. 50-201 Mr. Steve Maczaczyj WKWK 525 Falconer Street Jamestown, New York 14701

Dear Mr. Maczaczyj:

Ms. Mary Ann Richardson, legislative assistre.nt to Congressman Stanley N. Lundine, asked me to forward a set of reports that document results of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's (NRC) ongoing safety assessments of the shutdown nuclear fuel reprocessing facility in West Valley, New York.

The first of these reports, the NRC staff's Interim Safety Evaluation describes safety aspects of the facility in its present shutdown condition. Also enclosed is a series of reports on the potential effects of a major earthquake on the principal structures at the facility.

These structures are the reprocessing building, the fuel receipt and storage pool and the neutralized and acid high-level liquid waste tanks.

For your convenience, a separate list of these seismic-structural analyses is also enclosed.

Finally, a report from our contractor entitled, " Inspection and Evaluation of Nuclear Fuel Services High Level Waste Storage System," (RH0-LD-130) is also enclosed. This report summarizes our ongoing program to inspect and evaluate the high level liquid waste storage system using state-of-the-art technology.

If I can be of any further assistance, ple?se do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

!, A Charles J. Ha ghney Advanced Fuel and Spent Fuel Licensing Branch Division of Fuel Cycle and Material Safety
