Subject:

IE Bulletin No. 80-05 " Vacuum Condition Resulting in Damage to Chemical Volume Control System (CVCS) Holdup Tanks" -

vacuum protection review R. E. Ginna Nuclear Power Plant, Unit #1 Docket No. 50-244

Dear Mr. Grier:

In our June 3,1980 letter in response to the subject bulletin, we expressed our recognition of the USNRC concern for the possibility of problems during " abnormal conditions." A preliminary review has been conducted for evaluation of the addition of vacuum protection for the CVCS holdup tapAs which would satisfy the criteria discussed in the bulletin.

We have concern for the possibility that other problems may be presented with the addition of new features. As a result, we are in the process of undertaking a comprehensive review of the CVCS holdup system design.

When it is completed we will advise you of our further plans.

Very truly yours, go.u.

L. D. Whi., Jr.
