Response to IE Bulletin No. 80-18, Maintenance of Minimum Flow Thru Centrifugal Charging Pumps Following Secondary Side High Energy Line Rupture

Dear Sir:

Your letter, Reference (b), revealed a potential problem with Centrifugal Charging Pump Minimum Flow during certain secondary plant transients. Maine Yankee has completed the necessary review and offers the following information, numbered to correspond with the Bulletin.

1.

A minimum flow bypass line is included in the Maine Yankee design which remains open in all modes of operation to guarantee that minimum cooling flow is provided even at shutoff head. All safety-related analyses assume the presence of this open line.

2.

No modifications are necessary.

3 No calculation required by question 1.
