THE PROTOTYPE DEf10hSTRAT10N ASSEMBLIES ~ ,

I

~!

INTRODUCTION ~

LTo further the' demonstration effort begun in SCOUT, the PROTOTYPE Program was established to irradiate a large number of' test fuel : rods for the purpose of providing statistical data. on fuel perfo'rmance of alternate high burnup fuel designs. This process is being accomplished

.in discrete step-wise ' fashion (with SCOUT and PROTOTYPE) . to potentially . l lead-the design of future'rel.oads.

l alternate fuel designs -

.. ~ .

which offer high potential for extended burnop are the: primary-design concepts used in this program.

PROTOTYPE ~ consists of 4 assemblics, three of which are identical. The assemblies will be irradiated in symmetric positions within the core

f-PROTOTYPE Gul0ELINES
In designing the PROTOTYPE demonstration, certain guidelines were followed which aid in a description of the demonstration:

s 6

, 1.

No exterior changes' were made in the fuel rods or assemblies, i.e., all changes wera limited to fuel and inte, rnals of the fuel rod.

- . 2. - Test rod locations are non-limiting.

3. . Alternate fuel designs have the potential for improving fuel performance in~ one -or more' of the following areas:
