LOSS OF CONTROL AIR PRES 5URE At S:20 a.m. on August IS, one of the six air ccmpressors which su; plies air to all three reactors, suffered a massive failure which resulted in rapid less of centrol air pressure to all three units. ' Both Units 1 and 2 which were operating at nominal full power experienced control reds drifting inward as a result of low air pressure, and both units w:re prenptly manually scrared in accerdance with emergency procedures.
Unit 3 wcs already sht.: cown sc was nc: affected.
The failed cc= presser had a large hole in the cylinder head. The compressor was isolated and startup preparations were imediately initiated for bc h Units 1 and 2.

The licensee is expected to issue a news release in view of the fact that all three units are in unscheduled shutdown. liRC is censidering a press release.
A Region II inspector is ensite. The Sta:e of Alabama has been notified.
