19406 License No. DPR-35 Docket No. 50-293 Response to IE Bulletin No.79-03A
Dear Sir:
The following information is provided in response to IE Bulletin No.79-03A,
" Longitudinal tJeld Defects in ASME SA-312, Type 304, Stainless Steel Pipe."
Question 1 Determine whether SA-312.or A-312, Type 300 Series, fusion welded pipe is in use or planned for use in safety related systems subject to design stresses greater than 85 percent of the Code allowable stresses.
For the purpose of this check, the actual wall thickness of the piping products will be considered adequate if the Code requirements for pressure design of the piping products are satisfied using 85 percent of the maximum allowable stress at the design tempera-ture.
Response 1 Ile have verified that in safety related systems of Pilgrim Unit #?, there is no SA-312 or A-312, Type 300 Series, fusion welded pipe subject to design stresses greater than 85 percent of the Code allowable stresses.
In fact, the only areas where we have A-312, Type 304, fusion welded pipe are:
(1)
Suction side of the Stand-by Liquid Control Pumps (2)
Spent Fuel Pool Skir.:mer Drains 8008180646

Mr. Boyce H. Grier, Director July 24, 1980 Page 2 Question 2 For those piping components using greater than 85 percent of the allowable stresses, identify the application of the piping including the system, pipe location, pipe size, pipe configuration (elbow, tee), design pressure /
temperature requirements and the manufacturer.
Response 2 Not applicable Question 3 For those facilities under construction and where access permits, the ends of all safety related SA-312 and A-312 fusion welds should be etched to determine if CLP exists.
Identify the manufacturer and the degree of CLP as a percentage of the pipe wall thickness.
l Response 3 Not applicable Should you have any comments or questions concerning this response, please do not hesitato to contact us.
