Dear Mr. Eleison:

Thank you for your recent emTnts concerning the safety of the Three Mile Island Nuclear Generating facility.

Although the Pennsylvania Public Utility Cminission regulates the rates charged try Metropolitan Edison Company, the Nuclear Regulatory y

Camission regulates the safety and limnsing of nuclear facilities. I have therefore taken the liberty of forwarding your letter directly to j than.

1 As part of our current investigation we are examining the ability of Metropolitan Edison to provide safe and adequate service at reasonable rates for its entire service territory, including non-nuclear facilities.

If you have additional carents or stggestions, please feel free to contact my office.

Sincerely, 10gn  ??,x3-//d1/M//

ea r Xs Shanaran:

I urge you to do everything in your power to expecite 'uhe return of Three Xile Island Unit 1 to safe operation as

~

quickly cs possible. Af ter all, this unit was not damaged in the Three Mile Island accident on March 28, 1979, and

.? could be returned to operation in short order to produce

[

F the energy we need so badly and to cut down the consumption of oil which I a= sure is being used in the generation of some of the electric power that General Public Utilities Corp. is at present being forced to purchase from other 1

utilities because Three Mile Island Unit 1 is shut down.

There has been some talk on GFU taking tankruptcy proceed-i ng s . This would not be in anyone's test interest, and could be made more remote by returning the underaged unit l to operation quickly, thereby alleviating the acnumental 1

financial problems confronting current management, and at l the same time decrease the use of oil as mentioned above, 1

with all its associated benefits.
