--M P.O. BOX 618 NORTH COUNTRY ROAD + WA*3BNG RtVER, N.Y.11792 SNRC-504 September 12, 1980 Mr. Boyce H. Grier, Director Office of Inspection and Enforcement, ReJion i U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission 631 Park Avenue King of Prussia, Pa 19406 SHOREHAM NUCLEAR POWER STATION - UNIT 1 DCCKET NO. 50-322 I.E. BULLETIN No. 80-16

Dear Mr. Grier:

In response to I.E. Bulletin No. 80-16, " Potential Misapplications of Rosemount, Inc. Model 1151 and 1152 Pressure Transmitters with either "A" or "D" Output Codes", we have determined the following:

1.

Four (4) Rosemount Model 1151 Pressure Transmitters with "D" output codes have been provided by General Electric for use in safety-related applications at Shoreham.

An evaluation to determine whether they could be exposed to excessive input pressures such as to cause anomalous output signals is not complete.

2.

Twenty (20) Rosemount Model 1152 Pressure Transmitters with "A" output codes have been installed in safety-related applications at Shoreham.

The evaluation of these transmitters is also incomplete.

3.

Two Rosemount Model 1152 Pressure Transmitters with "A" output codes are in storage as tafety-related spare parts and are, therefore, not presently in service.

Mr. Boyco H. Grior September 12, 1980 Page two CORRECTIVE ACTION The evaluations of potential excessive input pressure and anomalous outputs are expected to be completed within a 30 day period.

We have already requested Rosemount to recommend th'a necessary corrective action for those transmitters found to be misapplied.

Corrective action will be determined upon completion of the evaulations now in progress.

Administrative controls will be implemented to ensure that those transmitters with "A"

or "D" output codes purchased as safety-related spares are not subsequently installed in applications where unacceptably high input pressures could result.

We will advise your office within 30 days of the results of the evaulations and the corresponding corrective actions, and will at that time submit the table requested in the Bulletin.

In response to your request for information to assist in evaluating the value/ impact of each Bulletin, we estimate that approximately 80 engineering manhours have been expended to date in responding to this Bulletin.

Very truly yours,

.)
