Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant - Unit 2 Training for Mitigating Core Damage (NUREG 0694 - Item II.B.4)

Gentlemen:

Fur der discussion on the subject of training for mitigating core damage with the staff has resulted in Alabama Power Company revising our previous commitments. This letter supersedes our letter on this subject of September 24, 1980.

Alabama Power Company is scheduled to commence the nevio'tsly approved training program for mitigating core damage on Septeuber 1980. This 4

program will be completed prior to operation above five percent thermal power.

The training program will also become a part of the requalification program for Farley personnel. Personnel attending the program will include licensed

operators, licensed senior operators, operations group supervision, emergency directors required by the emergency plan (includes chain of command from plant manager to operations group), shift technical advisors, and plant instructors associated with training for mitigating core damage. Examinations will be given to all personnel attending the program. Any personnel scoring less than 70% will be required to be reexamined until a grade of 70% is achieved.

In addition, selected personnel in the plant instrumentation and chemistry and health physics groups will receive pertinent portions of this training program in the areas these personnel would be expected to provide assistance if the core were to become severely damaged. The training will primarily be focused on vital instrumentation, primary chemistry, and radiation monitoring respectively.

Very truly yours,
