PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION October 23, 1980 PFLNINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE - ?NO-IV-80-37 This preliminarv notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE safety or public interest siznificance. The infor=ation cresented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff en this date.
FACILITY: arkansas Power and Light Company Arkansas Nuclear One, Unit 1 (Docket No. 50-313)
SUBJECT:
POSSIBLE DROWNING OF AN UNIDENTIFIED MALE, NOT EMPLDYED BY AP&L, WHO FELL INTO THE ANO UNIT 1 INTAKE CANAL At approximately 2:15.PM (CDT) on October 23, 1980, an unidentified male was observed falling into the intake canal of Unit 1.
This intake canal supplies cooling water to the condensers for Unit 1.
The unidentified male was a member of the general public and was outside the facility exclusion area when he was observed by other members of the general public as he fell into the intake canal.
Unit I was operating at 100% power when the individual fell into the intake canal.
The licensee does not plan to shutdown Unit 1.
The body of the unidentified se=ber of the general public was found at approxi-mately 3:30 p.s.
The body has been re=oved by ambulance.
The licensee has notified the appropriate law enforcement agencies.
