- J.C MEMORANDUM FOR:
Ross A. Scarano, Chief Uranium Recovery Licensing Branch FROM:
Gregory G. Eadie Uranium Recovery Licensing Branch
SUBJECT:
EDGEMONT CLEANUP ACTION PROGRAM--SCHOOLYARD ANOMALY I have just been notified by Pete Jackson, Battelle Pacific Northwest Laboratory (BPNL) Project Manager in Edgemont, South Dakota that resurveys of the schoolyard areas have shown an area about 20 feet in diameter having uranium mill tailings to a depth of about 6 inches (i.e., about 15'i cubic feet of contaminated material).
The exposure rr.e measured directly above this area is about 80 pr/hr.
At this time, steps are being taken by BPNL to fence in this affected area to control access; but, fortunately, this area is located at the far end of the shoolyard, near the baseball diamond and adjacent to several i;omes which have been identified as gamma anomaly locations.
Therefore, there is no imminent health hazard to anyone in the area and the students are not being exposed to any elevated levels.of radiation.
Mr. Jackson has notified local governmental officials and the school's principal and superintendent of this situation and has recevied their cooperation.
I have just notified the State (R. Richardson) of this ratter.
