June 22, 2020 MEMORANDUM TO:
Ho K. Nieh, Director Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation Raymond V. Furstenau, Director Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research John W. Lubinski, Director Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards FROM:
Anna Bradford, Director Division of New and Renewed Licenses Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation
SUBJECT:
REVISION 1 OF THE ACTION PLAN TO PREPARE THE U.S.
NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION FOR REVIEW OF INDUSTRY USE OF ADVANCED MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGIES This memorandum transmits, for your information, Revision 1 to the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission Action Plan for Advanced Manufacturing Technologies (AMTs),
Revision 1 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) Accession No. ML19333B980). This updates the initial action plan that was issued on January 25, 2019.
The revised action plan updates the status of continued, follow-on, and new tasks to proactively position the NRC for an efficient regulatory review of expected licensee use of AMT.
The objectives of this action plan are to:
Identify the AMTs most likely to be used for nuclear components that require NRC approval as additional information becomes available,
Prepare the NRC staff to review regulatory submittals containing components manufactured using AMTs,
Identify and address AMT characteristics pertinent to safety that are not managed or controlled by codes, standards, regulations, etc.,
Provide guidance and tools for review consistency, communication, and knowledge management for the efforts associated with AMT reviews, and
Provide transparency to stakeholders on the process for AMT approvals.
DNRL plans to hold a public meeting with interested stakeholders in July 2020.
