Condition 2.C.(4)' requires that UE perform a visual
' inspection of a sample of-hafnium rod cluster control 4
asseublies (RCCAs) during one of the first five refueling outages and that a summary of the results be enbmitted to the NRC.
An-inspection of all hafnium RCCAs was performed during Refuel-2 in the Fall of 1987. _The inspection used a combination of visual and eddy current tech-niques.
The eddy current technique represents a more quantitative inspection than the visual inspection required by the subject license condition.
The inspection results-indicated guide card fretting wear-as identified in.NRC Information Notice 87-19.
However, all RCCAs were considered acceptable for continued operation since at least 50% of the cladding cross sectional area remained at all axial locations along each RCCA rodlet.
At the beginning of Cycle-3, all RCCAs were axially repositioned to provide a new wear surface.for subsequent fretting wear, During Callaway Cycle-3, swelling of hafnium RCCAs o
was identified at other plants with Westinghouse supplied nuclear steam supply systems.
Although swelling was not identified at Callaway during the i
I Refuel-2 eddy current inspection, UE made a decision to replace all hafnium RCCAs with Silver-Indium-Cadmium RCCAs during Callaway Refuel-3.
Replacement was completed in the Spring of 1989.
