ENCLOSURE
-l l REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION l
MASSACHilSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY DOCKET NO. 50-20 4
- 1. -
The maxt:num hypothetical accident for the Massachusetts Institute of-
--Technology _Research Reactor is the melting of four of the highest power producing fuel plates and the_ result'ng dose to the staff and public from
+
1 the fission products released. Please reanalyze this accident providing calculated source term and doses to the staff and public based on your u
H requested increase in fission density limit.
Please determine if the amendment request involves a significant hazards consideration.
L 2.
Please analyze the possible effects of oxide buildup on your fuel plates _
l
)
caused by the increased time fuel is in core to achieve.the requested j
fission density. Does the presence of fuel' cooling fin grooves cause a 1
nonuniform buildep of oxide? Address the possible effects of redi!ced l
heat transfer causcd by both uniform and, if present, nonuniform oxide buildup in normal operation and transient conditions. Please analyze the possibility and effects of oxide spallation including any changes in the temperature and the location of the hot spot. Please address the possibility and effects of cladding pitting related to oxide buildup that may be affected by the fuel cooling fin grooves. If fission products were to be released by pitting or spallation please compare the radiologic consequences to your maximum hypothetical accident.
