Dear Mr. DeHart:

This responds to your telefax of November 7 regarding the export of gansna ray detectors containing Am-241 to South Africa.

3 Your interpretation of the NRC export regulation for Am-241 is correct.

There is a general license for anyone to export Am-241 to any country, other than to four embargoed destinations

. shipment, not to exceed 100 curies per ye,of one curie or less per ar to any country. This provision is found in 10 CFR 110.23(b).

You should note, however, that the NRC does not control the export of l

the type of equipment you propose to ship to South Africa and there are other statutes and restrictions which may apply to trade with South Africa, not within NRC's authority. You might wish to investigate these additional points with the appropriate agencies.

l Sincerely, l

h,

?
