  • In accordance with-References.1-4, Union Electric will perform a Level'l PRA and a containment performance method 1 of._ item 4 of Reference-1) for analysis.(i.e.,The examination wil1~ make-use of current Callaway.

Level 1 PRA techniques, as generally described in The containment performance References 1 and 4. ,

analysis will-follow the guidance given in Appendix 1 of J Reference 1 and. Appendix A of Reference 4. MAAP 3.Ob

? will be used to assess the phenomena associated with

' postulated severe accident transients.

Our schedule for performing the IPE is as follows:

!- Completion of Level 1 analysis: July, 1991 l# 't

  • Completion of containment performance (back-end). M

( analysis: February, 1992

-n September, 1992

  • Submittal of results to the NRC:

~ As~ discussed'in Reference 4,-a new design verification effort 'is- not: needed for confirmation 'that our Our

' IPE represents the.as-built, as-operated plant.

extensive design-control, configuration control, and document control programs will ensure that drawings and procedures used in the IPE reflect the. current-design and operating. philosoph;' of the plant. Design modifications and procedure changes occurring prior to sequence.quantification will be factored into the IPE submittal. The review process to be employed, discussed below, will also confirm that our IPE reflects the as-built, as-operated plant. As such, plant walkdowns will be limited to general plant familiarization and to those cases where as-built drawings may not be sufficient for the particular issue under consideration.

Walkdowns may be beneficial in addressing spatial and geometry issues associated with the internal flooding analysis, system dependencies and spatial systems interactions, and certain back-end phenomenological mechanisms. Such walkdowns are planned, and will be performed on an as-needed basis.

Regarding the Callaway IPE review process, all documentation packages will receive a peer review by an I individual who is involved in the IPE. This same review process is applied to assure the quality of all safety-related calculations. Independent, in-house -l j

L reviews will be performed on selected IPE task .!

documentation packages, as these packages are completed. l For example,-event tree documentation packages will be  !

l p reviewed by Operations Dept, personnel to ensure that the event trees accurately reflect the potential j l

accident initiator. Our IPE consultant will also' review 4

i all documentation packages. In addition, Union Electric l

l and Wolf Creek Nuclear' Operating Corporation will ,

L exchange and review documentation packages for the l

~ purpose of insuring that no potential vulnerabilities are overlooked. Callaway and Wolf Creek were designed, i

l' purchased and licensed under the Standard Nuclear Unit L

Power Plant ~ System (SNUPPS) concept and remain similar in design and operating philosophy. After the IPE-is completed, Union Electric intends to hold a training course to acquaint Operations, Engineering and other plant staff with the IPE process, results and potential future applications. Union Electric does not plan, however, to train a team of personnel, not involved in performing the IPE, to independently review the entire IPE.
