Engineering and Construction July 30, 1980 Mr. Boyce H. Grier, Director Office of Inspection and Enforcement U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Region 1 4

631 Park Avenue King of Prussia, Pennsylvania 19406

Dear Mr. Grier:

NRC BULLETIN NO.79-03A LONGITUDINAL WELD DEFECTS IN ASME SA-312, TYPE 304 STAINLESS STEEL PIPE NO. 1 AND 2 UNITS HOPE CREEK GENERATING STATION In reply to IE Bulletin No.79-03A, dated April 4, 1980, PSE&G offers

'the following response:

A review of all pertinent pipe classes for safety related systems at Hope Creek Generating Station, Units No. 1 and 2 has been completed.

There are no ASME SA-312 or ASTM A-312 type 300 series fusion-welded piping products in safety related systems at Hope Creek using greater than 85 percent of the Code's allowable stresses.

All applicable vendors have been contacted; Colt, Alpha-Laval, and GE. The following summarizes their response:

1. Colt will not use SA-312 fusion welded pipe.
2. Alpha-Laval uses SA-312 type 300 series pipe on all nozzles.

In their purchasing, they will specify seamless pipe and avoid fusion welded pipe.

3. GE confirms that no safety related pipe is fusion welded.

i Mr. Boyce H. Grier 7/30/80 It is our understanding, based on intent of the bulletin, that it is not necessary for fusion welded pipe or fittings not exceeding the 85 percent stress criteria to have etching performed on their accessible field weld ends to determine CLP.

Should additional information be desired, we will be pleased to further discuss it with you.

Very truly yours, CC: NRC Office of Inspection and Enforcement Division of Reactor Construction Inspection Washington, D. C. 20555
