AUGUST 15 1988 Ms. Liz Moore 1141 Kochenderfer Road Lebanon, Pennsylvania 17042

Dear Ms. Moore:

Your letter to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in Middletown requesting infomation about nuclear energy was referred to me for response.

The former Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) had a Congressional mandate to develop and promote nuclear energy. When the AEC was abolished in 1974, the NRC was created by Congress for the sole purpose of regulating the commercial production of nuclear energy. The U.S. Dep_.

ent of Energy is now responsible for the Federal Government's nuclear research and develop-ment activities. Consequently, questions about the advantages and disadvan-tages of this energy source should be directed to that agency.

One useful Department of Energy publication entitled "Living with Radiation" is available from the National Technical Information Service, Springfield, Virginia 22161 at a cost of $7.00 (order no. ERDA 76/89).

It contains a list of books on the subject.

I am pleased to provide yt-with this information.

Sincerely, l

Bernard J. Snyder, Program Director Three Mile Island Program Office Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation l
