KANSAS GAS AND ELECTRIC COMPANY GLCneN L. sto C37CR ccE Petsacang optsations June 27, 1980 Mr. W.C. Seidle, Chief 5 Reactor Construction and Engineering Support Branch U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Region IV 611 Ryan Plaza Drive Suite 1000 Arlington, Texas 76012 KMLNRC-008 Re: NRC Docket Jo. 50-482 Subj: Interim Report Potential 50.55(e) - Loose Sway Strut Bushings l

Dear Mr. Seidle:

On May 29, 1980, Mr. M. Clark and Mrs. R. Stambaugh reported to Mr. Ray Hall that loose bushings had been found in sway struts manufactured by Bergen Patterson and ITT Grinnell. Prior to this date we had made reports on loose bushings in Corner Lada sway struts. At the time of the verbal report to Mr. Hall, one loose bushing had been found in a strut manufactured by Bergen Patterson and ten loose bushings had been found in struts made by ITT Grinnell.

We have not completed our inspection of these struts and therefore do not know the extent of the problem. Likewise no evaluations or tests have yet been made to determine what effect, if any, loose bushings in these particular struts may have on the ability of the struts to perform their intended function under maximum design loads.

Inspection, documentation and engineering evaluation will proceed over the next few weeks. We will report further by September 1,1980 re-garding this problem.

Yours very truly,
