Dear Mr. Seyfrit:
This is the report required by I.E. Bulletin No. 70-19, dated August 10, 1979.
1.
We have a current set of NRC regulations and 00T regulations for the transport of radioactive materials dated September 27, 1976.
2.
We obtain burial requirements from Nuclear Engineering Company before each burial.
They have sent us copies of the license requirements for the Richland and Beatty disposal facilities.
3.
The person who is responsible for the packaging and shipping of radioactive wastes is David L. Wheeler, the campus radiation safety officer.
4.
Detailed instructions for operating procedures in the transfer, packaging, and transport of low-level radioactive material have not been prepared.
This is left to the professional judgment of the radiation safety officer.
5.
David Wheeler was trained on DOT regulations concerning the transportation of hazardous materials on November 10, 1976, by the HMAC Red Diamond Training Program.
The training centered mostly on how to read the regulations and very little on radioactive waste management.
6.
The Radioisotope Comittee has approved the segregation of those wastes which are nonradioactive or contain very low radioactivity from those to be shipped for burial.
This will greatly reduce the volume being shipped.
No foraal training programs are anticipated for persons generating these wastes.
7.
The volume of 10w-activity wastes which are shipped for burial is sufficiently low that a management audit is unpractical.
The person who is in the best position to perform the audit is the person who would need to be audited.

The audit required within 60 days was performed by the radiation safety officer in cbtaining information for Item 9.

a.
On May 10, 1978, a shipment of low-activity wastes was made to Beatty, Nevada, via Nuclear Enginee-ing Company.
The shipment included 12 Campus Safety Office, Watkins House, Brigham Young University, Provo. Utah 846o2 (801) 374-1211 Extension 2597 8&@8L Mascp
Mr. Karl U. Seyfrit Page 2 October 4, 1979 drums for a total of 72.2 cubic feet. No other shipments were made during the time period of January 1,1978,through June 30, 1979.
b.
A total of 0.034 curies was shipoed at this time including mostly tritium, carbon-14, and iodine-125.
c.
During this period of time we generated less than 200 gallons of liquid low-level radioactive wastes. Approximately 150 gallons have been absorbed in " Super-Fine" provided by Nuclear Engineering Company.
Approximately 5 gallons have been incinerated and the balance will be reprocessed with nonradioactive waste solvents due to the extremely low levels of radioactivity in these wastes.
We trust that this infonnation will satisfy your requirements imposed by I.E.
Bulletin No. 79-19.
