Dear Senator Mitchell:
b2 perhaps you are aware that CMP is planning an experimM.D high-level nuclear waste storage schema in 'liscasset, and final hearings are to take place on their proposal immediately aftw the Iuclear Referendum in Sept.
If you are not up on this mate here is a brief rundowns The spent fuel pool at I*aine Yankec wcs originally designed to hold a maximum of 159 metric tona of heavy metal (spent fuel).
They have now suggested -storing up to 772 metric tons (5 times as much as original specs.) in that sama pool.
To do this, they plan to use an experimental means of com-pacting the rods.
Each fuel assembly (a fuel rod assembly weighs about metric ton) will be dismantled by remote control, and m.ch cd will be placed in new assemblies, in a tighter formation.
To quote CMP's 1979 10-K report:
"The modificatien of this cap. city proposed by the Company differs from designs heretofore implemen o' at other nuclear facilities but is essentially the same basic co': pt of more compact storage in the-existin,3 spent fuel pool."
I don't think.iaine should be designated a provin; ;round for hi;-h-level nuclear experime.n..ts by the nuclear industry, and I am appealing to you for help on'this matter.
I hava many reasons to believe the NRC is an ally of ?/ cine Y~nkee first and a protector if the pu'$lic safety second.
