Novak, Assistant Director for Operating Reactors Division of Licensing U.S. Nuclear Reguictory Commission Washington, DC 20555

Subject:

Zion Station Units 1 and 2 Request for Aoditional Information Concerning the Mini WASH-1400 Report on Zion Station NRC Docket Nos.30-295 and 50-304

Dear Mr. Novak:

In your letter of July 7, 1980, which was received in this office on July 28, 1980, you have requested additional information which would support the mini WASH-1400 study of Zion nuclear station.

The information requested in the enclosure to your letter is of the very type which will be provided via the Pickard, Lowe & Garrick detailed probabilistic risk assessment which will be submitted early this fall.

As noted in our prior submittal and presentations to the NRC staff and consultants, the mini WASH-1400 study was conducted during the limited time frame of 60 days utilizing WASH-1400 as a base modified for plant-specific design as appropriate.

This report was submitted for information and the oral presentation given in Washington was intended to answer just the sort of questions which you are now documenting in this letter.

Given the amount of work currently being put into the Pickard, Lowe & Garrick study and other activities related to Zion Station, we believe that it is more efficient to provide the quite thorough PL&G study than it is to provide answers to additional questions at this point in time.

We look forward to helping the NRC understand the basis for probacilistic risk analyses of Zion Station.

Sincerely, fool D. L.
