400 Chestnut Street Tower II August 11, 1980 Director of Nuclear Reactor Regulation Attention:

Mr. A. Schwencer, Chief Licensing Branch No. 2 Division of Licensing U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, DC 20555

Dear Mr. Schwencer:

In the Matter of the Application of

)

Docket Nos. 50-327 Tennessee Valley Authority

)

50-328 This letter is an addition to my letter to you of July 8, 1980, concern-ing foundation engineering of the new ERCW pumping station. This letter clarified the TVA position on the use of the new ERCW pumping station between unit 1 and unit 2 operations.

Until the foundation engineering review by the hTC Geosciences Branch is completed, the existing (currently utilized) ERCW pumping station will be operational for providing ERCW for unit 1 operation and will act as a backup to the new ERCW pumping station after the new pumping station is put into service. Therefore, resolution of this issue has no bearing on the safe operation of the plant during the interim period.

Very truly yours, TENNESSEE VALLEY AUTHORITY L. M. Mills,lfanager Nuclear Regulation and Safety hO$
