Statement of Leo J. Finnegan Regarding the Amount of Electrical Generation Lost If Process Steam Supplied to Dov Does Not Pass Through the High Pressure Turbine. (Tr. 8714)

Heat balance 375 HB 302, attached hereto, represents the plant cycle which we propose to use. This cycle produces 526,420 YJ of electri-cal energy (gross) in addition to supplying 4,050,000 lb/hr of steam to Dov. This heat balance is based on rated nuclear steam supply system (NSSS) output of 2468 Kit.

Heat balance 375 HB 654, attached hereto, represents the alternate cycle proposed by Dr. Eckert. This heat balance shows as gross electrical -

energy production of 316,805 kW, and also supplies Dov vith 4,050,000lb/hr of steam. The USSS output for this heat balance is 2238 ! Git.

To make heat balance 375 HB 654 ccmparable to heat balance 375 HB 302, the NSSS output for 375 HB 654 was assumed to be increased by 230 M4t.

This then adjusted the NSSS output to rated conditions. The thermal energy of the steam supplied to Dow was subtracted frca the NSSS output to deter-mine the amount available to produce electrical energy. The conversion ratio .for the production of electrical energy from thermal energy '. ras then calculated.. Assuming that this conversion ratio does not vary with increased steem flow, the increase in gross electrical output due to an increase of 230 K.it in NSSS output would be 86 E4e. Thus the modified heat balance -

375 HS 654 would show a gross electrical output of approximately 403 M4e.

The gross electrical output of Midland Unit #2 is 855 MJ. The gross electrical output from Unit El as we have proposed the cycle vould be 526 MJ. The total plant gross electrical output would be 1381 KJ. The

2 cycle proposed by Dr. Eckert for Unit #1 vould produce gross electrical output of 403 Ff4, thus giving a total plant gross electrical output of 1258 W. . The difference between the two schemec is 123 W. Applicant's proposed method of operation vill, therefore, produce almost 9 85 more electrical output than Dr. Eckert's alternate.

Attached is 2 copy of the supporting calculations. The calcu-lations'.and methods used herein represent a simplified first order approxi-mation. More sophisticated calculations would yield more accurate results.

I believe that these results represent a reasonable approximation and that more sophisticated calculations would most likely result in a semewhat higher loss of electrical generation.

4 Dated July 10, 1972

Supporting Calculations USSS output as determined from heat balance 375 HB 654:

NSSS enthalpy change = 1242.6 - 363.1 = 879 5 atu/lb steam flow rate = 8,684,468lb/hr NSSS output = 8,684,468 X 879.5 = 7,635,939,406 Btu /hr or 7,635,989,406 = 2,238,000 kW 3413 Rated NSSS output is 2468 MW, tt2s heat balance 375 HB 654 is 230 MW below rated output.

Thennal energy used by Dow:

enthalpy change = 1242.6 - 73.0 = 1169.6 Btu /lb steam flow rate = 4,050,000 lb/hr energy use rate = 4,050,000 X 1169.6 = 4,736,880,000 Btu /hr or 4,736,880,000 = 1,386,000 kW 3413 portion of NSSS output available for electrical energy production = 2,238 - 1,386 = 852 W j conversion ratio = 852 = 2.67 316.8 Therefore, if the conversion ratio is assumed to remain constant with increased USSS output, the additional electrical output from an increase of 230 W in NSSS output would be 23o/2.67 = 86 W. The I total gross electrical output would then be 317 + 86 = 403 W. l l
