I am the Acting Branch Chief for Construction and Engineering Support of the Nuclear Regulatory Co: mission Region III Office of Inspection and EnforcecNt, which has the responsibility f or inspection of the Consu:ters Power Company of Michigan's Midland Plant, Units 1 and 2.

.' On Auguat 4,1976, I visited the construction site of the Midland Units in Midland, Michfgan. Examination of construction activit.es during the visit, combined with information gathered 4

by our inspection program, show that Unit 1 and Unit 2 were approxir.ately 13 and 16 percent complete, respectively, as of August 6, 1976, as reported in the August 1976 " Construction Status Report" NUREG-0030-7. Specifically, the status is as follows.

F equipment storage buildings have been erected. At the time of the inspection on August 4,1976, backfill was being placed and compacted around the excavation for the reactor and auxiliary buildings. The river inlet structure is under construction, and an outdoor storage area is being graveled, fenced, and lighted. The steam supply line to Dow Chemical has not been laid.

In sucimary, those construction activities which impact upon the site topography, flora, and fauna have essentially been performed.

b.

The reactor building bases have been poured, and the contain-ment liners have been erected up to the dc=e level for both units. The containment done liner for Unit 2 is presently scheduled to be set during November 1975. Concrete placement I

is utlerway within both reactor buildings.

c. The a 2xiliary building foundation is completed, and erection-of walls and floors is currently in progress. The concrete structure had been erected to an elevation slightly above grade level as of August 4,1976.
d. The Unit 2 turbine base mat and turbine pedestal have been pourc., Unit 1 base mat has been completed, and the turbine pedes.al is under construction.

. motor operated valves, piping, steam generators and pressurizers have been delivered to the site and are stored until installation. ' Unit 2 reactor vessel and steam generator installation is presently scheduled for June 1977, with installation in Unic I scheduled approximately one year

The primary construction activities scheduled for the next six months are installation of reinforcement steel and concrete in the reactor, auxiliary, and turbine buildings.
