Washington, D.C. b 7 c) tod Gentlemen:

I hope that the Hearings before your august body, relative to the application for licensing to build and to operate a Nuclear Power Generating Plant in Midland by the Consumers Power Company, can be reconvened witnout further delay.

I make this plea because Michigan is one of the foremost industrial leaders in an industrialized Nation. The use of electric power has increased not only by industry, but also in residences to the extent that additional generating capac-ity is an emergency need at the moment.

The News Media have carried stories from time to time, and most certainly you must be aware of them, that in cases of extreme heat where people use air conditioners and other cooling devices, all powered by electric energy, so overload the present generating capacity that. there are brown-outs in many large areas, and the ese of electricity in those areas is curtailed.

l We are also told that now 60% of our power capacity for all purposes is generated l by the use of oil, and it has been proven that our oil supplies are rapidly being depleted, and the search is now on for additional supplies. However, we know that even if additional supplies are found, they too will be rapidly depleted.

To my mind, it seems unthinkable that we delay in providirig other sources of cheap

power, such as the delaying of Hearings on plants that wish to build such sources.

I know that the people opposing such nuclear plaats are sincere in their opposition, however, it is questionable if they have been given true information, or whether they have magnified any possible harmful affect way beyond its proportion.

O Atomic Energy Comission October 13, 1971 Huclear generating plants are now operating, and most certainly we have information as to their safety and reliability, and are fully capable of dealing with any harm-ful affects that might ensue from their use. One has only to look at the use of nuclear power in ships and submarines, where human beings are in close contact with such power without detrimental affects, to see that we indeed can harness this new source of energy to the benefit of the people. -

Therefore, I beg of you in the best interests of the people of this State, and the-Hation also, that the Hearings be resumed promptly; that Consumers Power be allowed to build this Plant, and I hope other power companies will do likewise.

Thanking you for your prompt action, I remain, Sincerely yours, ml j ?.MAv[..! --
