1 500 SOUTH 27TH STREET. DECATUR. ILUNols 62525 July 28, 1980 Mr. James G. Keppler Director, Region III Office of Inspection and Enforcement U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission 799 Roosevelt Road Glen Ellyn, Illinois 60137

Dear Mr. Keppler:

Clinton Power Station Unit 1 Docket No. 50-461 Construction Permit No. CPPR-137 On June 25, 1980, Illinois Power Company verbally notified Mr. H. M. Wescott, NRC Rgion III, of a potential reportable deficiency per 10CFR50 55(e) concerning suspect cracking in some electrical hanger hardware supports.

Our investigation of this matter has not been completed, and this is to serve as an interim report per 10CFR50 55(e)(3) . A series of tests has been initiated by the material supplier (Super Strut) to verify whether or not the hardware supports will perform to the designed intent. Preliminary tests produced inconclusive results, and further testing is scheduled within the next month.

-We anticipate that we will need approximately ninety days to com-plete our investigation of this potential deficiency and deter-mination of reportability.

Sincerely, L. . Koch Vice President GEW/em cc: Director, Office of I & E, NRC, Wash. D. C.

H. H. Livermore, NRC Resident Inspector
