Dear f1r. Engelken:

Subject:

WNP-1/4 RESPONSE TO IE BULLETIN 80-08 The subject IE bulletin, entitled " Examination of Containment Liner Penetration Weld," has beeil reviewed for application to our Nuclear Project Numbers 1 and 4 (WNP-1/4).

Our response to the concern raised in Bulletin 80-08 is as follows:

1)

The designs for the primary piping containment penetration to outer sleeve welds are typical of the configurations (a), (c),

(d), ',e), and (f) shown in Figure NE 1120-1 Winter 1975 Addenda to the 1974 ASME B&PV code.

2) a)

The applicable ASME code for installing the pipe / flued head assembly is the 1977 cdition including the Summer 1977 Addenda.

b) 100% radiographic inspection will be specified for the subject welds with the acceptance criteria per ASME B&PV

code, c)

The joint configuration for the attachment field weld of the process pipe / flued head assembly to the containment penetra-tion sleeve utilizes a full penetration J-groove butt weld with E-B inserts or using the open butt technique.

The follow.ing materials and thickness ranges are being used.

o SA-333 Grade 6 normalized (.322-1.31 inches thick) o SA-155 Grade KC 60 (.75-1.50 inches thick) d)

The process pipe / flued head assemblies have not been installed.

The installation of the assemblies will start the third 3

quarter of 1980.

We have concluded that problems such as described in IE Bulletin 80-08 do not exist at WNP-l/4.

Very truly yours, i it i
