Dear Mr. Alger:
This is in reply to your letter of May 12, 1980, to the President on the safety of nuclear power plants.
Enclosed is a statement of December 7,1979, by the President on the Kemeny Commission Report on Three Mile Island. This includes the following:
"The steps I am announcing today will help to ensure the safety of nuclear plants. Nuclear power does have a future in the United States.
It is an option that we must keep open.
I will join with the utilities and their suppliers, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the executive departments and agencies of the Federal government, and also the State and local governments to assure that the future is a safe one."
An Action Plan has been developed to provide a comprehensive and integrated basis for the actions judged necessary by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to correct or improve the regulation and operation of nuclear facilities as a result of the experience with the Three Mile Island accident and the official studies and investigations of the accident. Every effort is being made to protect the public health and safety at all nuclear power plants that are currently in operation or that may start operating in the future.
Sincerely, j
m Harold R. Denton, Director Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation
