SUBJECT:
SutHARY OF THE MEETING HELD ON MAY 20, 1980 TO DISCUSS THE TOPROD FUEL DESIGN FOR THE PRAIRIE ISLAND PLANT (PI)
On May 20, 1980 representatives of NSP and the Exxon Nuclear Corporation (ENC) met with the NRC staff to discuss the design of fuel assemblies to be put into future reloads of the PI Plant. Attendees are listed in Enclosure 1.
The meeting was held at the request of NSP for the purpose of advising the staff of the NSP plans to introduce a modified fuel assembly design into future reloads of the PI Plant. At present, Unit No. 1 has 16 Exxon fuel assemblies with four gadolinia bearing fuel pins (one weight percent gadolinia) per assembly. Unit No. 2 has 24 Exxon fuel assemblies with four gadolinia bearing fuel pins (one weight percent gadolinia) per assembly.
It is planned to put into Unit No.1 in the late 1981 reload 40 assemblies, 20 of which will have from four to eight gadolinia pins per assembly with four weight percent gado11nia. The Unit No. 2 ceload for early 1981 will include fcur fuel assemblies which have from fou" to eight gadolinia pins /
assembly of four weight percent gadolinia.
The fuel pellets on the upper and lower six inches of the active fuel assembly length will consist of naturally enriched U02.
The topics discussed in the meeting are outlined on the enclosed agenda. A brief comparison of the TOPROD fuel design to the present PI and to the present Palisades fuel design is also enclosed. Based on the information provided in the
~
meeting, the staff did not identify technical problems with the proposed fuel design. The information supporting this change in fuel design for the PI Plant will be submitted in future documents to be prepared by ENC and in the NSP reload application. These documents and the proposed schedule for their sub-mittal are also identified in the enclosure.
