MEETING OF THE UETROIT BUILDING TRADES COUNCIL ON TUESDAY, NOVEidER 2, 1971.
WHEREAS, Consumers Power Company proposes to construct a nuclear power plant with zero radiation release to meet the power needs of the,Dow Chemical Company in Midland; and WHEREAS, the anchoring of the Dow Company in Midland is vital to the economy of that area; and UHEREAS, the cost of the construction has risen considerably during the three years the application for ccnstruction has been pending before the Atomic Energy Commission; and WHEREAS, considerable and expensive efforts are included to keep thermal and other pollution at safe ecological levels; and WHEREAS, unemployment among building tradesmen in the Midland area currently is estimated at 22 per cent; and WHEREAS, some 30 million dollars in wages for building tradesmen are included in the cost of constructing the plant; THEREFORE s 2 IT RESOLVED that the Detroit Building Trades Council support the proposed construction of the Consumers Power Company nuclear power plant at Midland and urge the Atomic Energy commission with all due speed consistent with the public welfare, I
approve the Consumers Power application so that construction j
can begin as soon as possible; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this resolution be sent to U.S. Senators Philip Hart and Robert Griffin, all Michigan j
Congressmen and the Atomic Energy Commission.
