Dear Chairmra Ahearna:
The' Environment, Energy, and Natural Resources Subecc.ittee, which I chair, has an ongoing 1.nterest in the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's response to the implications of the Three Mile Island accident. As part of that oversight concern, the subcommittee has been examining the NRC's " Action Plan" and the related policy statement of June 16 affecting the conduct of licensing proceedings involving cc=pliance with the Action Plan.
To fos r public understanding and awareness of the issues raised in that policy statement and by certain aspects of the Action Plan, the subcomittee will hold public hearings July 2, beginning at 10:00 a.m. in Rayburn Room 2247. You and the other Comissioners are invited to appear and present your views regarding these matters to the subecmittee.
The subcomittee does not wish, however, to overburden the schedules of the entire Comission. In light of the extensive discussion of the June 16 policy statement in prior public meetings, and based on the extensive written dissent of Cc=missioner Bradford to the staten. ant, the subcommittee's needs likely could be met by testimony from your= elf and from Commissioner Bradford.
Should other Commissioners choose co appear and present their separate views on these issues, they will of course be most welcome.
The subcommittee is particularly interested in the Comission's perceptions regarding the need for the policy statement, how many proceedings it is expected to impact, and whether or not the Comission intends to extend similar limitations on intervenors to other proceedings, notably construction per..it applications.
Thank you for your assistance in the subcomittee's work.
p503 Sincerely yours, g
