SUmfARY OF }2ETING ON SPECIFICATIONS FOR CONCP2TE MATEPJALS j

On July 8,1974 members of the Ra;;ulatory staff met in Bethesda, Mary-land with representatives of Consumers Power Company (CPC), Bechtel Assc'.iates Professional Corporation (BAPC) and Bechtel Power Corporation (Bechtel). The purpose of the meeting was to discuss specifications for concrete and the results of tests performed on aggregate and finished i

concrete. Seismic category,I structures now being -constructed with this l

concrete include the interior walls of the auxiliary buildingL'and the_ base

~

~

i mat for unit I containment building.

4 At the meeting, Bechtel presented samples of washed and unwashed aggregate and strength test cylinders and explained the data and test rectics.

Seive analyses of the aggregate showed the fines content of some samples i

to be as high as 2.3% and the average was approximately 1.7%.

The i

American Society for Testing Materials apecification C33 (ASTM-C33) permits fines up to 1.5%.

The proposed ASTM-C33 would permit higher I

fines content provided the strength tests showed good results.

i The app 1feant also. presented the results of strength tests that showed

~

that the strength of concrete made with unwashed (high Fines) aggregate.

j was equal to or greater than the strength,of concrete made from we'hed s

aggregate.

i There was a discussion of the preparation of trial concrete mixes cocpared to the batch plant operation and the quality assurance functions pertinent to concrete produccion. No facts were presented that would indicate inadequate quality assuranca.
