'I FACILITY
- MIDLAND PLANT, UNITS 1 AND 2 SUmARY.0F MEETING ON RADIOGRAPHY OF COHTAINMENT LINER PLATE WELDS Representatives of the Regulatory staff, Consumers Power Company and Bechtel Power Corporation met in Bethesda, Maryland on November 8,1973.
An attendance list is enclosed.
The applicant requested this meeting in order to inform the Regulatory staff that the containment liner plates that had been welded together thus far had not been radiographed to the extent called for in the Preliminary Safety Analysis Report (PSAR) and to discuss with the staff the current codes and standards governing such radiography.
Approximately twenty percent of all liner plate welding has been completed, including the shop welds and some field welds. None of the liner plate has been erected. Leak-chase channels have been welded in place over the liner plate welds and the welds have been leak-tested.
The-completed welding.was performed in the hat position and the work of each welder was radiographed to the extent of 10% of the first 10 feet of weld and 45 thereafter. The PSAR calls for the work of each welder in each welding position to be radiographed 10% of the first 4
10 feet and 10% at rendas thereafter. Regulatory Guide 1.19 calls for the work of each welder in each welding position to be radiographed for the entire first 10 feet and then 1 foot in each additional 50 foot increment. The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Proposed Standard for Concrete Reactor Vessels and Containments,Section III Division 2 Paragraph CC5520 c411s for radiography of 1 foot of weld in the first 10 feet and 1 foot in each additional 50 foot increment. Therefore, although radiography was generally perfomed to a greater extent than called for by the proposed standard and by the Regulatory Guide (4%
rather than 2%), it did not fulfill the requirement of the PSAR.
