INTERiti REPORT'#4 DATE:
July 6, 1978 PROJECT: Consumers Power Company Midland Plant Units 1 & 2'
.Bechtel Job 7220
- Status of Corrective Action and Investigation The status of actions in progress for resolution of the subject MCAR is updated as follows:
1)
Preliminary individual anchor load sheets including thermal, weight, and seismic response data were provided to ITT-Grinnell on June 22, C
. 1978.
~
ITI-Grinnellisanalyzingtheanchordesignwitht5esedatato evaluate whether allowable stresses are exceeded. Preliminary results indicate that allowable stresses are not exceeded in 6-inch i
anchors.
Preliminary analysis of 3-and 4-inch anchors is ocheduled to be completed by July 14, 1978.
While performing this analysis. ITI-Crinnell is rechecking their previous analysis to ensure that ef forts were technically correct (see Corrective Action Item 1 of Interim Report #1).
- 2). Unforeseen complexity in the calculation of piping water hammer loads has been encountered.
In particular, the following reasons are cited:
a)
The effects of system piping friction losses have been determined
(
to be significant and therefore had to be incorporated into the sy' stem computer model, in addition to the ef fects of air and vapor compression..
b)
Asymmetry of the spray headers has introduced additional modeling complexity.
For these reasons, hammer forcing functions will not be available' until July 17, 1978, with formal results to follow in late t July.'
3)
Procedural methods for anchor design review and approval continue to be monitored.

Bechtel', ssociates Professional Corporation NCAR #22 INTERIM REPORT 4 Page 2 July 6, 1978 Forecast Data for Investigation and Corrective Action The following specific forecast dates are provided:
1)
ITT-Grinnell evaluation of anchor loading which includes seismic forces will be completed by August 1, 1978.
2)
Bechtel hydraulic water hammer evaluation will be completed by August 1, 1978. Anchor loading design criteria do not require that seismic and water hammer loads be additive.
Therefore.
if anchor loading which includes water i.ammer loads exceeds loading which include seismic, loads, reanalysis by ITT-Grinnell will be required.
Such efforts, if required, would not be completed until September 15, 1978.
i.
Inasmuch as the next corrective action and investigative milestone is
~
se,heduled for late July, the next report will be provided by August 7,1978.

Finalized results of ITT Grinnell anchor design analyses for thermal, weight, and seismic response data are not available at this time.

Status of Corrective Action and Investigation g
The status of actions in progress for resolution of the subject MCAR is updated as follous:
1)
No change in status on anchor design analysis for ' thermal, weight, and seismic response is reported at this time. When Interim Report
- 5 was written, the next interim report was scheduled for October 6,'1978..
2)
"The results of piping water ha=mer analysis have indicated that loads including water hammer significantly exceed those developed including seismic. The revised program for analysis is as follows:
a.
Time-history data for water hammer will be developed by Bechtel.
~b.
ITT-Grinnell will perform an analysis to determine the adequacy of anchor design for the loads developed as a result of Item 2.a.
These efforts will include an analysis in accordance with Appendix F of Section III of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code.
Forecast Data for Investigation and Corrective Action The following specific forecast dates are provided.
1)
Finalized results of ITT-Grinnell anchor design analysis for thermal, weight, and seismic response data will be submitt'ed in the next interim report, scheduled for October 6, 1978.,
2)
Item 2.a above is scheduled to be completed by October 1, 1978.
3)
Item 2.b above is targeted to be completed by January 19, 1979.,
Firm schedules will be available by the next interim report.after a technical meeting with ITT-Crinnell.
