Eabcock & Wilcox (James H. Taylor) letter to the Nuclear Regulatory Ccesission (Dr Ernst Vol enau), dated March 9, 6

1978.

The referenced letter reported, under 10 CFR Part 21, a si nificant deficiency 6

in the design of the NI/RPS system. This letter is an interim 50 55(e) report for the deficiency as applicable to the Midland Nuclear Plant. The report 4

attached to the referenced letter provides the details of the reportable condition for the BW generic design. B&W suggested a test prcgram to resolve the deficiency. An evaluation is in pro 6ress en the applicability of the reportable condition to the specific design of the Midland Plant and the feasibility of using the test program to resolve the deficiency.

Another interim or final report vill be supplied by May 31, 1978.
