DOCKLT UO 50-329, 50-330 IS DULLETIII 77-05A FILU: 0505.2 SERIAL: h683 On January 6, 1970, we provided you a partial response to IE Bulletin TT-05A in regard to Lalance of Plant Equipment. This letter completes that response and covers liSSS equipment as supplied by the B W Company for the Midland Plants Unit 1 and 2.

BW has reviewed the equipment supplied for Midland Unit 1 and 2 and determined that systems contain a variety of electrical connector assemblies. The connectors are located in three general areas: Control room, auxiliary building, and contain-nent.

These connectors have been evaluated under the following assumptions:

A.

The containment environment design basis accident (DBA) is a loss of coolant accident (LOCA), and the containment envircnnent for all other accidents is enveloped by these conditions.

B.

Connectors in the auxiliary building and the control roon vill be exposed to no environ:l ental concitions more severe than the design rance conditions.

Specific parameter values for these conditions are contained in the Midland Plant FSAR. Under these assumptions, ve have determined that 3D supplied electrical connector assemblies which may need to be reported in response to IE Bulletin 77-05A are qualified as folleva:

1.

Control Room All control room equipment with connectors was succcssfully tested to design rance conditions.

2.

Auxiliary Building Auxiliary building equipment supplied by 31.1 includes the control rod drive control system (CRDCS) and pressure / level /ilev transmitters. The Claco IE 8006120 g

3 Containment A.

Transmitters: Pressure transmitters use Conax fittings (pressure seals to isolate vire terminal points from the environment). The followin6 B&W supplied transmitters are required to operate under accident condi-tions; the connectors supplied with these transmitters have been qualified to the containment environment DBA (LOCA).

Power ranse nuclear instruments: The UI are supplied through B&W by a subvendor, with triax connectors. These connectors are located in a connector box embedded in concrete above the detector thimble; the box is sealed with a Casket. With respect to these connectors:

j

1) The B&W subvendor states that these connectors are qualified to a i

design range temperature of 200 F.

ii) The UI provides primary trip protection on s n11 steamline breaks 2

(SSLB) (less than 2.0 ft ) and rod ejection accidents (REA). Each of these accidents may result in containment environments which produce containment te=peratures in excess of 200 F.

0 iii) It is B&W's judgme - 9at the location of the connector in the connector box vil:1

____.:it the local connector conditions to within design ranSe during the UI required period of operability. This conclusion is based on the following:

-The NI is required to function within 5 seconds for the design basis REA. The UI connector is not expected to be adversely affected by the environment resulting from the REA during this interval.

-The required period of opegability for the NI during a SSLB depends upon break size: A 2.0 ft break assumes a flux trip at approximately 8 seconds. The required period of operability for the NI during a steamline break of scall break sizes is dependent on numerous parc=cters.

However, the maximum period of time that the NI would be required to operate is less than 15 seconds. The ill connector is not expected to be adversely affected by the environment resulting from a SSLB during the period of time it is required to operate.
