Dear Mr. Grier:

Your letter of July 27, 1973 requested a design review of the control circuit for the containnent ventilation system isolation valves to be installed in the Hidland Plant. This concern was based on a certain plant in which a single control switch failure resulted in si=ultaneous failure of redundant purgo supply valves, as documented in R.O. Bulletin 73-2.

Please be advised that no containment ventilatica systen isolation valves have been installed.or purchased for either of the Midland Units,

- and hence no corrective action is necessary to prevent occurance of fail-ure indicated in R.O. Bulletin 73-2.

Uc will be taking tha follorin;; precautions to insure that redundant containuent isolation valves installed at Midlsnd are not subject to these failures:

Piping and instru=entation dia;; rams, control logic a.

dicGrans and electrical schc.natic dia;;rens vill show physically and electrical 17'independant controls for pover operated redundant containment isolation valyca.

b.

Since containnent isolation valves are within the scope of 10 CFR 50, 'A_apendi:: 3, Quality Assurance Requirements vill insure that a. above is acconplished for design and followed through for procurcrent and installation.

Yours very truly, 6
