MEMORANDUM FOR:

R. Kiessel, Mechanical Engineering Branch, DSS FROM:

J. W. Shapaker, Section 3 Leader, Centainment Systems Branch, DSS

SUBJECT:

CONTAINMENT PURGE ISOLATION VALVES, DAVIS DESSE, UNIT 1 T;1e applicant has indicated his intention to use the contaiment purge system during plant operation. The purge system isolation valves, wnich are listed in Table 6-8 as contaiment isolation valves and receive signals to close in the event of an accident, cust, therefore, be considered " active valves." Figures 6-5 and 6-6 in the FSAR, indicate the worst pressupe and temperature transient expected in the containment for the 14.14 f t hot leg DBA. The valve should be assumed to be fully closed 10 seconds after the LOCA. 9e have based our review of the applicant's proposed use of the contaiment purge system on the assumption that the isolation valves will be capable of closing during the transient referenced in the above figures.

If during the course of your review of the operability of the purne system isolation valves it becomes evident that the above assumption is not warranted, please contact D. Pickett as soon as possible.
