Attn:
Mr. John F. Stolz, Chief Light Water Reactors Branch No. 1 Division of Project Management United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C.

Dear Mr. Stolz:
This letter documents our conference call of November 19, 19 76, in responsa to your letter of November 9, 1976, regarding the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station Unit 1 separation criteria for safety related redundant electrical cable conduits.
Toledo Edison will comply with the intent of the subject separation criteria for safety related redundant electrical cable conduits. As was outlined in our conference telephone call, we are immediatt'y under-taking the following action:
1.
Conduit carrying redundant safety related cable will be separated by at least 1" wherever it is feasible.
2.
Such conduit not capable of 1" separation will be separated as much as possible, but in no circumstances be allowed to contact each other, and will be given a nominal minimum separation of approxi-mately 1/8".
Conduit locations with less than 1" separation will be tagged for future reference.
3.
An analysis and tests will be performed to assure that where there is less than a 1" space between conduits, that there is no detri-mental degradation of safety related circuits in conduit from the most limiting fault condition which could occur in an adjacent conduit carrying a redundant safety related circuit.
Such analysis and tests will be performed using electrical overload and short-circuit parameters bounding the potential exposures.

4.
Should the results of the analysis and tests indicate that less than 1" spacing without barriers between conduits carrying safety related redundant electrical cables is not adequate to prevent detrimental degradation, protection will be assured by (1) barrier installation or (2) modification of conduit supports or rerouting to obtain 1" spacing or spacing adequate to permit barrier instal-lation.
We are confident that this approach will assure the integrity of safety related redundant electrical cable conduits found to be in contact or in close proximity to each other.
FSAR, Revision 24, to be submitted within two weeks will reflect this commitment.
Yours very truly, LER:ss j
