TOLEDO i

umasom GdNN J. SapsoN vice pree.oent, po e July 28,1972 Docket No. 50-346*

Mr. Boyce Grier Regional Director U. S. Atomic Energy Commission Directorate of Regulatory Operations Region III 799 Roosevelt Road Glen Ellyn, Illinois 60137

Dear Mr. Grier:

In reply to yohr letter of June 29, 1972, concerning verification records of valve body minimum wall thickness, there are no valves currently at the site over 1-inch nominal pipe si::e that will be installed within the reactor coolant pressure boundary of the Davis-Besse Station.

Review of the valve manufacturers' procedures who are supplying valves under our purchase orders and those of Babcock & Wilcox for use within the reactor coolant pressure boundary shows that all manufacturers involved have established procedures for direct physical measurement of actual vall thickness.

Our purchase specifications are being revised to include a requirement for documentation that valves in the above category, being delivered to the site, meet the minimum wall thickness requirements of the specified codes and standanis.

The Babcock & Wilcox inspection procedures are also being revised to include verification that valves in this category meet the minimum wall thickness requirements prior to shipment.

Yours very truly, g !,.
