Dear Mr. Stols:

We have reviewed your letter concerning the reactor vessel seal ring at Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station Unit I which we received on March 14, 1978.

The cavity annulus seal ring around the Davis-Bessee reactor vessel is not left in place during normal operation, but rather is stored in a manner and location to prevent it from becoming a missile. Also, no biological shielding is installed in the reactor cavity annulus during operation.

Yours very truly, Lowell E. Roe i
