REFERENCE:
(a) Letter from Mr. C. H. Cruse (BG&E) to NRC Document Control Desk, dated June 14, 1989, Response to NRC Bulletin 89-01 Gentlemen:
We ' are providing ' additional information to supplement our response to NRC Bulletin 01 (Reference a). The bulletin requested that we discontinue installation of Westinghouse mechanical plugs from heats 3279, 3513, 3962 and 4523. Installation of a
Westinghouse'. mechanical plugs from the suspect heats has been discontinued for both
- Unit I and Unit 2.
j We also have supplemental information concerning our attempts to remove suspect plugs that appeared to be leaking. Three plugs with signs of possible leakage were discovered on the cold leg side of No. 21 Steam Generator. As we reported in Reference l
(a), attempts to remove two of the plugs failed. Combustion Engineering's attempt to remove the third plug' failed when the bottom threaded skirt of the plug shenred off.
L As we stated in Reference (a), any Westinghouse tube plugs. we' are successful removing ll from Calvert Cliffs steam generators will be examined for the presence of primary water L
stress corrosion cracking on a sample basis for each heat.
