' Senator Barbara Mikulski US Senate
' Washington, DC Oear Senator Mikuiski:
This letter concerns the plan for BG&E to store radioactive waste above ground at Calvert Cliffs.
i I was driving today with the radio on when I heard a caller raise the Calvert-Cliffs issue on the Diane Reahm show. The caller was correct.
There is some 4
sort of plan-to store waste at tha Calvert Cliffs plant and there isLa plan
- to-re-open the LNG plant which is in very close proximity so the nuclear plant..
As I am sure you are aware, BC&E has had numerous and serious problems cited I
recently at its Calvert Cliffs plant.
'I am also sure that you have been made aware than ING is not the most stable product. What you may not be aware of-is'tbe fatal accident'that occurred at the LNG plant uhen it was in operation.
It is potentially hazardous enough to have these two plants in auch close proximity. As n'Calvert County resident off and on for over ten years, and.
now permanently at Cove Point (within the immediate danger area of both plants),
I mada the choice that I-could live with the decision that was ill-advised when it was made to have these two plants se close together.
What I cannot
' live with....and don't think'I should have to, is the records of those plents "y
and.the new decision to store waste at Calvert Cliffs.
In this instance, the potential hazard'is' tremendous in my view, and not one that i or anyone else.
>could'have bargained for.
Will you please look into the issue of storing waste at Calvert Cliffs, by it-
'self, and in conjunction with the pleaned/ potential re-opening of the LNG plant?
.In closing, lat me make clear that I do appreciate your. record of caring:and.
a
-your tireless. efforts on behalf of your constituents.
I realize just how im-portant the Calvert Cliffs plant is to BG&E and the people it servcs, but the risk of these new plans is so gtent that I am sure you will want to re-view them La detail, and have BG&E and NRC-lock for alternatives.
