.t WASHINGTON, D. C. 20555 Docket No. 50-320 JUL 101980 The Honorable John Heinz United States Senate Washington, D. C.

20510

Dear Senator Heinz:

I am writing in response to your note of May 9,1980, to NRC regarding the letter f rom your constituent, Mr. James B. Hurst, who had several comments and questions regarding the decontamination of the reactor building atmosphere at TMI Unit 2.

We have also received this correspondence from Mr. Hurst.

The NRC staff has reviewed Mr. Hurst's letter along with other letters received in response to our request for comments on the environmental assessment. All these coments, including Mr. Hurst's, were considered in detail and evaluated in prep-aration of the Final Environmental Assessment, NUREG-0662, Volumes 1 and 2 (copies enclosed). The report Mr. Hurst mentions by Gerald L. Pollack of Michigan State University proposed a selective absorption process similar to the Oak Ridge National Laboratory system..The rejection of this proposal was based upon the time required to implement it.

I am also enclosing copies of NUREG-0673, " Answers to Questions About Removing Krypton f rom the Three Mile Island, Unit 2, Reactor Building" and NUREG-0558 " Population Dose and Health Impact of the Accident at the Three Mile Island Nuclear Station."

Both of these reports will answer questions raised in Mr. Hurst's letter.

I trust that these documents will adequately respond to your constituent's concerns.

~

Sincerely, isigned)T. A.Rehm ts William J. Dircks, Acting 0 Executive Director for Operations I
