Unit No.1, Docket No. 50-329; Unit No. 2, Docket No. 50-330; Smc11 Break Analysis, Howe-74-78, dated May 12, 1978 The referenced letter was an interim report as is this letter. CPCo and our A-E reviewed the long term solutions proposed by B&W for the small break LOCA analysis /HPIsignificantdeficiency. It is our present plan to use a design modification which requires HPI line crossovers downstream of the HPI line isolation valves and outside of the reactor building as well as the addition of five check valves for each unit. This particular solution has the advantage of not requiring any operator action.

Consumers vill pursue the above stated design modificat$on over the next several months to validete its adequacy and to assure that it is the most desirable solution. Typical detailed engineering to be completed includes sizing of lines, designing / selecting additional hangers and valves, relocating lines and valves, reanalyzing HELBA or generating a new EELBA analysis and preparing a revised or new stress analysis for the system.

A revised ECCS analysis is being conducted by B&W for incorporation in a revision to their Topical Report B&W lolo3, ECCS Analysis of B&W's 177 F.A.

Lovered Loop NSS, which will be referenced in the Midland FSAR.

Another interim or final 50 55(e) report vill be provided on or before September 29,1(Jf8.
