A e Mr. liarold Price 11ay 28,1970 A large percentaga of the processes are inherantly so. sensitive to the presence of water that very small steam leaks vill be detected by normal precess nonitocing dcvices or rcutine quclity mencurcrents on the product.

For those processes whare stea:a lecks are not scif-evident, other acchods of testing may be used, such as (1) Periodic testing of the heat exchange device for Icahs, or (2) rcriodic testing of procecs interruodintes, procena vastes, or products. Statistical sampling methods will be used for such periodic testing. The number of heat exchange devican makeo continuous cn-line monitors for 3esha in each individual unit impracticabic.

Of the condensate from th? cecondary steam, up to 1,500,0C0 lbs. por hour will not be returned to the nuclear steam supply system as feedwater and will be disposed of through the Lav vaste treatment syr ca.

The reasons for this condensate not being returned are due to its bn-coming contaminated with chemicals from such sources as steam jets for producing vacuum and to the impracticability of a colicction systen to recover the cendensate from every use point. The unraturned condensate flows into sewers to the Dow waste treat =cnt cystem. The volume of liouid effluent from the wastc treatment syste:u is such thct the con-densate will be diluted approximately ten times.

P,ecause much of the unrcturned condensate is contcminated by chemicals btfore reaching the wasta system, tha effluent fnom the waste sy.nea contalus such a high icvc1 of solids, and the large volume of flow, en ion exchange system for removal of radionuclidsa is impracticabla.

This effluent will comply with regulations of the Michigan Water Re-sources Co. mission.

1. Observance of processes where Icaks are scif-evident due to effect of precence of small quantitics of water,
2. Testivg heat exchaage devices foe lechs on a sectinti-cal samplias basis.
3. Other tests on a statistical sampling basis.

B. Leaks will be repaired prouptly after detaction.

C. The adminierrat.iva prn; rem vil? 'ncluda:

1. Direct oparc ting cupervisory responsibility for observ-ing or testing for Icaks.

2 Coordination and surveillance of the program by a Quality Assurance Group. ,
