Subject:

Arkansas Nuclear One-Unit 1 6 2 Docket No. 50-313 6 50-368 License No. DPR-51 Fire Protection (File: 2040, 1510, 2-2040, 2-1510)

Gentlemen:

In regard to your letter of November 17, 1977, Item 1, considerable review on our part will be necessary before submittal of the requested information. We cannot supply a commitment or an alternate proposal before January 31, 1978. We believe a ten week response time on an effort of this scope to be reasonable especially considering intervening holidays and the current massive effort to prepare for our January refueling shutdown.

In regard to Item 2 parts a and b, we understood the scope of our original analysis to be verbally approved by the staff. However, by the telecon of November 15, 1977, and the above mentioned letter, we now understand that considerable more information and documentation is necessary for the Staff's review. Some of the information requested was documented in our files for a few of the fire zones but very little on many others and in no case is all of the information readily available for any particular zone. Therefore, documentation of the requested information will take a considerable amount of work on our part and is already in progress.

In regard to parts e and d, basically, this information is available although in the form of engineering notes. Considerably less time will be involved to assemble and process this information for a final submittal than for parts a and b.

Mr. ' D. K. Davis 6 Mr. J. F. Stolz December 6, 1977 1-127-5 2-127-2 The fire hazards analysis is top priority and as many man hours as possible are being devoted to its completion. As of this date, our origional analysis is approximately 98% complete and a final submittal will be made very soon containing that information. However, due to an apparant misunderstanding of the information needed for the Staff's review, a considerable amount of effort on our part will be necessary to supply the requested infomation in the subject letter. Therefore, we will be unable to supply this information before February 15, 1978.

We consider such a schedule for such a enormous effort to be remarkable.

Very truly yours, Daniel H. Williams Manager, Licensing DHW:JTE:dr J
