Arkansas Power & Light Company Arkansas Nuclear One-Unit 1 Docket No. 50-313 Supplementary Information
Dear Mr. Giambusso:
Mr. R. C. DeYoung's letter of November 16, 1973, requested additional information concerning the electrical and control systems of Arkansas Nuclear One-Unit 1.
In reply to three of the four items in Mr. DeYoung's letter, we have submitted Amendment No. 42 to our Final Safety Analysis Report on the same date as this letter.
Item four of Mr. DeYoung's letter requested information on our use of PVC (polyvinyl chloride) as a covering for flexible steel conduits in the subfloors of our control and computer rooms in regard to its fire retardant capabilities.
The following steps have been taken at Arkansas Nuclear One to minimize fire hazards in the subfloor of the control room, and to assure contin-uous safe operation:
1.
The cables in this area are all control cables with no signi-ficant BTU heat output as would be the case for power cables.
All cables have either hypalon or neoprene jackets.
9 e
2.
The control cables of safeguard channels are enclosed in e
flexible sealtite conduit type UA made by Anaconda Cable 4
Company.
The Anaconda UA sealtite conduit has a PVC cover-p USAEc ing that protects the cable completely from oil, grease, 2
water, dirt, chemicals, corrosive fumes or abrasion. Wi th DEC S 1973 " :y regard to fire hazards, the PVC material itself is fire I~
% 2}
retardant and self-extinguishing.

Mr. A. Gianbusso Novzmbar 30, 1973 3.
Additional steel spacers separate conduits of redundant channels that cross over one another in the subfloor space.
This separation affords additional isolation between channei: from heat that might possibly be generated within one conduit in the unlikely event that the control cable short circuits.
4.
In the unlikely event that a fire should occur in the control room subfloor, a Halon fire suppression system is activated to extinguish the fire while being non-injurious to personnel.
1 This system will minimize the fim damage and prevent the pro-pogation of fire through the subfloor area.
The Halon system is activated automatically by heat detectors installed through-out the subfloor area, or can be activated manually.
Smoke i
detectors are also installed in the subfloor area to actuate alarms in the control room. Alarms are also provided to indicate loss of the Halon and cylinder pressure, and for control power failure.
In the computer room subfloor, cables are routed in rigid steel conduits and there is no PVC in this area.
Very truly yours,
